Medical term: Coronary artery bypass grafting

You choose the doctor. We take your case to them.
Understand the procedure
What is heart bypass surgery?
Heart bypass surgery creates another route for blood to reach the heart muscle around narrowed or blocked coronary arteries. The surgeon uses a blood vessel from elsewhere in the body to make this route. Your records may call the operation CABG, coronary artery bypass grafting or a coronary bypass.
This is general procedure information. Your chosen doctor assesses what applies to you.

Questions for your chosen doctor
Choose the questions that matter to your situation. We record them in your own words and take them to the consultation.
- Which findings in my angiogram support bypass surgery, and which arteries would you treat?
- Why is CABG being proposed in my case rather than medicines alone or angioplasty with stents?
- How urgent is the operation in my situation, and what should I do while awaiting the planned consultation?
- How many grafts are planned, and which blood vessels would you use?
- Would you recommend on-pump, off-pump or a minimally invasive approach for me, and why?
- How do my heart function, kidney function, diabetes, previous stroke or other conditions affect my risks?
- What should my family expect during recovery, and what follow-up and cardiac rehabilitation would I need?

Records to organise
We arrange the angiogram, heart-function reports and treatment history so the chosen surgeon can review the recommendation alongside your questions. Share what you already have; your treating team decides whether anything further is needed.
Share the records you already have. This is a document checklist, not a request for new tests.
Bring together what is available
- The coronary angiogram report and existing angiogram images or video, if available
- The cardiac surgeon’s or cardiologist’s written recommendation, including any proposed graft plan
- Existing echocardiogram reports, including the recorded pumping function, and relevant ECGs
- Recent available blood reports, particularly kidney function, blood count and diabetes-related results
- Current prescriptions, allergy details and the list of blood-thinning medicines you take
- Previous heart-attack, angioplasty, stent or heart-operation records and discharge summaries
- A dated account of symptoms, previous treatment and the questions you want answered
When you cannot attend yourself
