Understand the procedure

What is achalasia treatment procedures?

Achalasia affects the movement of the food pipe and relaxation of the muscle at its lower end. Procedures aim to make swallowing easier by reducing resistance at that outlet. They do not restore normal food-pipe movement.

This is general procedure information. Your chosen doctor assesses what applies to you.

Understand the proposed plan

What the operation may involve

Myotomy approaches

Heller myotomy cuts the tight muscle surgically. POEM reaches that muscle through an endoscope passed into the food pipe.

Balloon treatment

Pneumatic dilation stretches the outlet with a balloon. It is a different approach with its own benefits, risks and possible need for repeat treatment.

Reflux and follow-up

Reducing the outlet pressure may allow reflux. Ask how the proposed procedure addresses that risk and how swallowing will be monitored.

Your decision, your questions

Questions for your chosen doctor

Choose the questions that matter to your situation. We record them in your own words and take them to the consultation.

Your existing case file

Records to organise

We organise the oesophageal manometry report alongside your treatment history and the written procedure recommendation. We note what you want the gastroenterologist or upper gastrointestinal surgeon to clarify and keep the original reports available for the consultation.

Share the records you already have. This is a document checklist, not a request for new tests.

Bring together what is available

  • Oesophageal manometry report
  • Endoscopy and timed barium-swallow results if available
  • Weight and swallowing-symptom history
  • Previous dilation, botulinum injection or myotomy records
  • Your written procedure recommendation, current prescriptions and allergy details
